I have the same feeling when I walk in a very beautiful place that I have when I play and it goes right.

The Ghost Army was a United States Army tactical deception unit during World War II officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. The 1,100-man unit was given a unique mission within the Army to impersonate other U.S. Army units to deceive the enemy. From a few weeks after D-Day, when they landed in France, until the end of the war, they put on a traveling road show, using inflatable tanks, sound trucks, phony radio transmissions and playacting. They staged more than 20 battlefield deceptions, often operating very close to the front lines. Their mission was kept secret until 1996, and elements of it remain classified.

Clementi - Piano Concerto in C Major, WoO 12
I. Allegro

Felicja Blumenthal, piano
Prague New Chamber Orchestra
Alberto Zedda,cond.

“Clementi plays well, as far as execution with the right hand goes. His greatest strength is in passages in thirds. Apart from that, he has not a kreuzer’s worth of taste or feeling—in short, a mere mechanicus,” Mozart pronounced in a letter to his father in 1781. “He is a charlatan, like all Italians; he marks a passage presto but then plays only allegro.”

Mozart, not known for effusive compliments to musicians other than himself, might have been exceptionally bitter about a recent ‘cutting contest’ with Clementi in the presence of the Austrian Emperor and the Grand Duke and Duchess of Russia. The contest was held on the Viennese firebrand’s own turf and was declared a draw, an usual experience for Mozart to say the least.

Muzio Clementi is today remembered primarily for his easier sonatinas for the piano and the Gradus ad Parnassum, a fairly massive program of technical exercises and studies that served thousands since 1826. But he composed a large amount of fine music—some of his sonatas, in particular, are real gems and were frequently studied and performed by Beethoven and later championed by Horowitz. In his adopted home of England Clementi became a veritable fixture as a publisher and eminent piano manufacturer, while continuing to concertize throughout Europe and to teach as well. Moscheles and John Field were among his most celebrated pupils.

It would be naive to suppose that Clementi’s playing was anything so tasteless as Mozart describes. For his part, the “Italian charlatan” had only glowing praise for his competitor’s performance in the same duel. Though we do not always remember him as a major figure today, it would be difficult to overstate Clementi’s influence on the course of the piano and pianism—the touch and technical bravura he taught quietly revolutionized the approach to the then-newfangled instrument paved the way for the coming generations of dynamic virtuosi.
